History under review: The Black Panther Party

Writing project four requests that students review an element of American History that they believe is critical to understanding identity and culture. A historical movement often forgotten is the Black Panther Party, a political party focused on the idea of self-defense in the Black community. The party played an important role in the American Civil Rights Movement. The party advocated for the rights of Black people, protected the Black community, and served the community.

Despite the crucial role the party has played in the Civil Rights Movement and inspired many other Black organizations. The Black Panther Party is discussed little to none in textbooks. Typically, when discussed, the party is briefly mentioned and painted in a negative light. Thus, I think it is important to investigate the origins of the party and how its existence has played a valuable role in the Black community and American history. The whole story of the party must be brought to light and taught with the American Civil Rights Movement. By educating students on the Black Panther Party, they can gain a better understanding of African American culture and identity.
